Driving License Category A2
The A2 category of driving license permits you to operate motorcycles without sidecars and have a maximum engine output of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the motorbike cannot exceed 0.2kW/kg.
The step-by-step process of constructing this driving licence allows you to obtain your small motorcycle driving licence earlier and gradually progress to higher engine power with the A2 licence.
Scooters and motorcycles
Driving license category A2 is the second stage of a motorcycle driver’s licence. It permits you to drive small motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum cubic capacity of 125cc. After passing the test in the category A2 you can drive a motorcycle with or without a sidecar as well as vehicles on three wheels with a power of up to 35 kW. They must also have a weight/power ratio of not greater than 0.2 kg/kW and must not be built from a vehicle that has twice the power of the maximum.
If you’ve completed the two-part test for a motorcycle or moped of a lower class since 1st Jul 1996, you can skip the theory test and only take the practical exam. You can choose to use a small scooter, or moped equipped with L plates, or you can obtain the new AM licence that allows you to ride bikes up to 50cc, with a maximum speed of 45mph. Four-wheeled vehicles
This category covers all motor vehicles with four wheels that are not buses or passenger vehicles. It also covers utility vehicles such as vans, pickups, and panels. To operate a vehicle in this category, you need to have passed the theory test. To do this you need to take 12 lessons of 90 minutes of the fundamental content and four additional lessons lasting 90 minutes for the additive (category A2). The theory tests require a minimum score of 70 percent.
If you pass the theory test, you’ll have to pass a practical driving test on private property and on public roads. Once you have passed both of these tests, you will receive a request for a driving license. Motor vehicles with five or more wheels
This category includes power-driven vehicles designed to be used on roads and for the transport of passengers or goods. These vehicles should have at least two or three wheels that are in contact with ground as well as a driver’s chair or saddle and a motor that is able to achieve speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles come with brakes and a steering wheel. They also have the ability to be controlled in a normal direction, and can travel in reverse. In certain instances these vehicles are equipped with a hood or another covering that can be opened. This term was traditionally used for trucks (vans minivans, minivans, pickups as well as sport utility vehicles) and buses that can carry at least 16 passengers. Motor vehicles with trailers
